TRAILERS: STYLES

Dan Skinner from Film Space told me how there are different types of trailers and its style, which will be affected by several factors. The trailer will appeal the films main target audience and aims to create questions, leading the audience to find the answers to by watching the film.

Dan skinner explained how the style of the trailer will be affected by many factors such as its time frame, who sees it and where it is seen.

  • The teaser trailer
  • The main trailer
  • TV spots
  • Using graphics
  • Trailers in the digital age

THE TEASER TRAILER

  • The teaser trailer will be the first glimpse at the film and it will be quite short. The whole idea of a teaser trailer is for the audience to get a sense of what the theme is and give them a first impression of what to expect.
  • The teaser trailer will not focus on the story arch of the film as this is quite difficult to fit into such a small time frame

THE MAIN TRAILER

  • Within the UK the main trailer is usually between around 2-2.30 minutes long whereas in the US they can be up to 3 minutes long
  • This will give you a much greater idea of the story and meaning that is portrayed in the film. The story is put across in the three act structure, where first the scene and characters are established
  • Secondly the antagonists are introduced and problems the characters face are shown, allowing us to build are greater impression of what the story is all about.
  • Finally there will be a montage of several clips from the film, making the audience excited to see more, therefore convincing them to watch the whole film.
  • The third part of the film will also include titles which will include the director, acting cast and film ratings.
  • By showing well known directors and actors and production company there is a pedigree, the elements of the films heritage. By showing titles that read "From the director of", many people who have seen one of their previous, successful films, may be attract to see another one of their films.
  • There may also be fans of specific actors in the film, therefore showing them will increase attraction.

TV SPOTS

  • TV spot is like any other trailer however it is usually shorter than a normal trailer.
  • Sometimes repeatedly shown within some regular scheduled broadcast, but also possibly as a "one-off" screening.
